Thyroid Balance

Thyroid balance contains nutrients and herbs that support a healthy thyroid hormone biosynthesis. This specific combination of nutrients may guide the expression of thyroid hormone genes. With the inclusion of ashwagandha and guggul extract may aid in the conversation thyroxine and triiodothyronine (T4 and T3) and may support healthy blood lipid levels.

Signs of Thyroid imbalance include but is not limited to:

  • Fatigue
  • Dry skin
  • Weight gain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Irritability
  • Sleep disruption
  • Rapid heart beat

Discussion

Iodine: The two main iodine-containing hormones that the thyroid gland produces are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones circulate throughout the bloodstream and work to regulate metabolism and growth in every living tissue and cell. 80% of the body’s iodine pool is contained in the thyroid gland. Iodine is specifically used as a substrate for the production of T4 and T3, healthy iodine levels are vital for normal and healthy thyroid function and thyroid hormone biosynthesis. Thyroid Balance provides 75 mcg of iodine from Atlantic kelp in each serving.

Selenium:The study of selenium and its benefits towards thyroid health have been elucidated more recently. According to Arthur et al, “Selenium is an essential component of many selenoproteins that regulate thyroid hormone synthesis, preserve thyroid integrity in conditions of marked oxidative stress, and control hormone metabolism in non thyroidal tissue where the prohormone T4 is converted to biologically active T3.” The relationship between selenium and iodine has become an area of interest and research. In an animal study, it was shown that high iodine levels paired with the presence of low selenium levels may result in thyroid tissue damage due to the low thyroidal glutathione peroxidase activity.

Zinc and Vitamins A and D: Research has shown that low intake levels of zinc, Vitamin A and D may impact thyroid hormone metabolism, circulating thyroid hormone concentrations, and the thyroid response to iodine prophylaxis. Vitamins A and D could increase the transcriptional actions of the thyroid hormone genes. These genes affect growth, differentiation, metabolic homeostasis, and development.

Vitamin E and Rosemary: The imbalance of oxidants and their elimination of antioxidative systems results in oxidative stress. Research supports the concept of reducing oxidative stress to protect thyroid cell health and maintain normal thyroid cell growth. Due to the fact that active oxygen radicals can negatively affect the activity of a specific enzyme involved in the conversion of T4 and T3. Furthermore, reducing oxidative stress may have a two-fold application in thyroid health. The antioxidative components in Thyroid Balance may help protect thyroid cells and also support the conversion of T4 to T3 by reducing free radicals.

Guggulsterones and Ashwagandha:According to research, guggul extract has shown positive influence on thyroid function and blood lipid metabolism. In one animal study, guggulu reversed induced decreases in thyroid hormone and 5’-deiodinase activity in an animal model of low thyroid function. Ashwagandha is able to stimulate thyroid function in mice.
