Top 5 Causes of Inflammation and How to Heal

by Dr. Nick Zyrowski June 22, 2022

We talk a lot about inflammation in the body and how it can affect your health, but how do you know if you have any inflammation? What are the things you should be aware of so that you can make the changes to get your health back on track?

Some of what is making you inflamed may surprise you. Many of us know that diet and certain autoimmune diseases cause inflammation, but it goes much deeper. In fact, some of these causes can contribute to the autoimmune problems that make you feel worse. In this article, we tackle the five top cause of inflammation and what you can do to heal your body naturally.

5. Environmental Toxins

You may not realize that the household cleaner you use every day can be harming your health. Many of us use harsh chemicals to clean our homes. We also have beauty products that are full of toxins. Pesticides can cause severe inflammation in some cases. When we put those on our skin, we are risking inflammation to our bodies. Everywhere you look, you will see soaps and deodorants with various scents. These may smell nice, but they get made with all sorts of chemicals your body doesn’t need. (1)

Instead of buying a ton of harsh products, why not try some natural ones that are good for you? It is easy to get different cleaning and beauty products with healthy and safe ingredients. You can also go online to get recipes for natural combinations that don’t contain toxic chemicals.

4. Drugs and Alcohol

We have all seen people who drink a ton of alcohol. You can sometimes look at them and tell they have enormous inflammation in their bodies. They have a swollen gut, swelling in the face and sometimes the hands. Excessive alcohol can add up to inflammation.

When we talk about drugs, you may think that doesn’t affect you because you never touch anything illegal. Before you discount this too fast, you may want to check your medicine cabinet. About 70 percent of Americans take at least one prescription medication. (2) The next time you see a commercial for the latest pharmaceutical drug, listen to all the warnings. You may hear them describe inflammation, even if they don’t directly mention the word in the ad. These drugs can also wear down the liver and kidneys, the body’s filtering organs. Essentially, you get a double shot of inflammation as the drugs can make the body become toxic because of taking too much of them.

Limit the amount of alcohol you consume. You may want to have an occasional drink, and a small amount is not what we are referring to here. You never want to put excessive amounts of alcohol in your body. Also, take any prescriptions responsibly. You may need to take medicines for a time, but you should try to maintain your health by implementing natural methods whenever possible.

3. Food Sensitivities

You may have specific food allergies and know there are things you must avoid, or else you might have a reaction. An example of this is when someone has a peanut allergy, and they don’t know there is peanut sauce in their foods. They may eat it and have an allergic reaction. That could be anything from a rash to swelling of the throat. In these cases, they get rushed to the emergency room.

Food sensitivity is when there are things that may even be considered healthy for others, but your body doesn’t like them. You may not have an allergy to them, but if you consume these, your body could react by becoming inflamed. One of the signs may be brain fog after eating these foods.

Pay attention to how you feel after eating. Within the next day or two, see if your body shows any signs of inflammation. Do you feel lethargic and can’t seem to gather your thoughts? Do you feel bloated or have joint pain? You may even have a weird rash that develops. These are all signs of inflammation that can present in subtle ways. If you notice them, avoid eating these trigger foods.

You can also take a food sensitivity test. The test is easy to perform and only takes minutes. It can also be done in the comfort of your home and will measure sensitivities to 96 different food antigens.

2. Sugar

Sugar is a huge concern if you have inflammation in your body. Inflammation thrives on a high-sugar diet. You must remove it to get that inflammation down and feel better. When you continue to consume sugar, it can cause chronic inflammation, which can lead to other health problems, like diabetes and heart disease.

You may be one of the people who feel like you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, but sugar is not a required nutrient. The occasional sweet treat may be okay for holidays and special events, but it is best to eliminate sugar from your diet and find alternate ways to enjoy your snacks.

There are sugar substitutes which won’t harm your body and have no effect on inflammation. You can make your treats using items like stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol. Studies even show that erythritol can be good for oral health. (4)

You can learn how to cook these special treats and heal your inflammation while changing your diet. It doesn’t have to get complicated or overwhelming. With a few pantry staples, you can make delicious food your whole family can enjoy.

1. Unhealthy Fats

Unhealthy fats are a big concern for many people. For years we got told that butter was terrible for us, but margarine was fine. We now know that is false information. If you have believed this and have been using bad fats, you need to remove those from your diet. These unhealthy fats may be hydrogenated oils that fried foods get cooked in at restaurants. Eating a diet high in unhealthy fats can cause inflammation throughout your body.

When you remove all the bad fats, you want to replace them with good fats. These are things like butter, ghee, coconut, and olive oils. You can also eat things like fatty fish and avocados. Many of these foods are loaded with healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which drive down inflammation.

Bonus Cause – Stress

If you deal with chronic stress, it can take a toll on your health. You may have a job that causes you to have anxiety. You may not realize it, but you could be under tremendous amounts of stress.

You may feel like there is no remedy for your kind of stress because of the source. Many people believe it is a natural part of life because we can’t always change our surroundings.

When you cannot change what is happening around you, you can redirect how you respond to these things. Find ways to calm your brain that make your feel better. That may be a hobby you enjoy that takes your mind off things. It could be a short walk outside to unwind in nature. There are many mindfulness apps that help you meditate and relax. Whatever it is for you, find a coping strategy that reduces stress.

The Inflammation Impact

You may not have paid much attention to inflammation in the past. Sometimes we go to the doctor and talk about our symptoms, but nothing gets addressed. The truth is your doctor may not know how to treat your issues.

It is crucial that you partner with an expert who has experience dealing with inflammation. There are clinical ways of treating inflammation that don’t require dangerous prescription drugs. You do not have to live with inflammation or the problems it can cause you.

You can get out of chronic pain and leave fatigue behind. When you get to the root cause of your problems, you can reverse inflammation and become healthy again. Changing your lifestyle can drastically change your life! As always, we are here to help you on your health journey.
