MTHFR Genotyping

Why is MTHFR Genotyping Important?

MTHFR genes may suffer from certain genetic mutations which results in the production of an enzyme with reduced activity. Reduced activity can create elevated levels of homocysteine which is known as hyperhomocysteinemia. High homocysteine can be harmful because it may double the risk of developing illness or complications. This test can uncover the potential causes of elevated homocysteine levels which will better allow us to develop a plan of action to correct the issue.

Dangers Associated with High Homocysteine:

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Cerebral Vascular Disease (Stroke)
  • Arterial and Venous Thrombosis
  • Methotrexate Toxicity in Chemotherapy

Who should be tested?

  • Individuals with high levels of homocysteine
  • Those with cardiovascular disease, stroke, or thrombosis in family history
  • Anyone that may qualify for methotrexate therapy.

Specimen Type: Blood
